Established in 2006, Six Points Fellowship for Emerging Jewish Artists (SPF) is a partnership of Avoda Arts, JDub, and Foundation for Jewish Culture. It is an independent program to support emerging artists in their 20s and 30s whose work features Jewish ideas, concepts and questions. It is based on the realization that popular culture (film, music, television, books and magazines) is a powerful connector and mechanism for strengthening Jewish identity among young unaffiliated Jewish adults. SPF was successfully piloted in New York City in 2006 with support from UJA-Federation of New York.
SPF selects and cultivates a group of nine young emerging Jewish artists to participate in a two-year program that helps them develop their Jewish knowledge and artistic skills, explore the intersection between Jewish themes and their artisitc disciplines, and produce exhibitions/performances that promote a deeper connection to Jewish identity. The program focuses on communities that offer few opportunities for Jewish activity for young adults, including Russian, Persian and Israeli communities in Silverlake, Echo Park and Hollywood. It includes monthly Jewish learning, professional development workshops and annual retreats that develop fellows' skills to assume leadership roles in the Jewish community.
