ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION

Founded in Inglewood in 2008, the Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) is dedicated to improving the education, health, and well-being of youth and communities of color. SJLI works with schools to offer its evidence-based Urban Scholars program, which supports and empowers young men of color to succeed in school and advocate for change in their communities. In addition, SJLI works to build thriving communities by providing healthy lifestyle classes, building local gardens, distributing groceries, and working with community stakeholders to increase investments in local communities. SJLI works in the communities of Inglewood, Compton, Watts, South Los Angeles, Lennox, Lancaster, and Palmdale, as well as Houston, TX and serves over 350 students each year.

Urban Scholars

$150,000

To support the expansion of the Urban Scholars program, which supports and empowers young men of color to succeed in school and advocate for change in their communities. It will expand to three new pilot sites, with a potential focus on schools in the San Fernando Valley, Centinela Valley, and Santa Monica.
