Record number of grants distributed in The Foundation’s 70-year history reflects an unwavering dedication to the well-being of the Jewish people

LOS ANGELES (Sept. 26, 2024) – The Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles (The Foundation) today announced it has awarded $4.3 million in new grants to 87 nonprofits serving the Jewish community locally and in Israel. This landmark initiative represents a record number of grants distributed in one phase and reflects The Foundation’s unwavering dedication to the safety, well-being, and resilience of the Jewish people. In Los Angeles, $2 million is being directed to 58 Jewish nonprofits to enhance healthier workplaces and staff wellbeing, fortify the collective effort against antisemitism, and reinforce a Jewish social safety net for vulnerable community members.

In Israel, over $2 million is being allocated to 29 nonprofits addressing critical needs in the aftermath of October 7th, including mental health and resilience, social cohesion, and support for at-risk children and youth. Additionally, in recognition of the immense pressure faced by Israeli nonprofit workers, a portion of each grant made in Israel in 2024 will be used to prioritize staff wellness.

Rabbi Aaron Lerner, Foundation president and chief executive officer, stated: “This $4.3 million of support to a record 87 nonprofits underscores our enduring commitment to strengthen our local Jewish community and the people of Israel. In the past, we focused on supporting a smaller group of nonprofits with bigger grants. However, in light of the challenging times we’re living in, broadening our recipient pool to include a wider spectrum of organizations will better meet the pressing needs of our community. As we celebrate 70 years of service, we remain steadfast in our support of essential programs that foster resilience, unity, and well-being.”

These new grants follow the 55 Security Grants distributed in July to enhance the physical safety of local Jewish nonprofits in collaboration with JFEDLA and the Tepper Foundation. Total Foundation grantmaking in the past two months exceeds $5 million directed to nonprofits locally and in Israel.
