Job Title:

General Accountant

Position Summary:

The General Accountant plays a key role in maintaining the accuracy and integrity of the Foundation’s financial records.  This position is responsible for daily banking activity monitoring, reconciliations, journal entries, payroll-related uploads, and support for compliance and audit preparation.  Also, cross trained in Accounts Payable and Payroll.  The ideal candidate is detailed-oriented, organized and comfortable working with complex financial systems and data.  This role requires collaboration across Finance, HR, and Advancement teams and supports donor reporting and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Banking and Cash Activity
    • Monitor daily online banking activity, including wires, ACH gifts, and check cashing exceptions
    • Forward wire and ACH gift details to appropriate staff for processing
    • Approve check cashing exceptions and issue stop payments as needed
    • Process AP wires and confirm check cashing requests from staff
    • Execute ACH prenote process
    • Gift processing as needed
    • Accounts payable functions as needed

    General Ledger and Journal Entries

    • Prepare Journal entries for cash transfers, miscellaneous cash receipts (took out multi-year grant accrual as it’s covered by Sr Accountant), fund balance closures, and other adjustments
    • Record and track prepayment amortizations
    • Record and track quarterly depreciation and maintain fixed asset schedules

    Payroll and Benefits Processing

    • Upload payroll-related contributions and deductions to benefit providers (e.g. WEX, Ascension, AFLAC, UNUM)
    • Process retirement plan contributions (403V, 457, Rabbi/Canto Plans)
    • Calculate and submit quarterly employer contributions
    • Provide backup for payroll processing as needed

    Tax and Compliance Support:

    • Process estimated tax payments online
    • Assist with audit and tax schedules and documentation
    • Prepare the file miscellaneous tax forms, including:
      • Welfare Exemption Report
      • Business Property Statement (Form 571-L)

    Qualifications include:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field;
    • Minimum 3-5 years of accounting experience, preferable in nonprofit of foundation settings

    Skills:

    • Strong understanding of general ledger accounting and reconciliations
    • Proficiency in accounting software and financial reporting tools
    • Advanced Excel skills and comfort working with large datasets
    • Experience with banking platforms and journal entry creation
    • Familiarity with payroll and benefit processing
    • Excellent analytical, organization, and communication skills.

Working Conditions:

  • Some local or Los Angeles area travel may be required to setup meetings and participate in events.
  • Flexible work environment with hybrid work schedule.
  • Salary: $80,000 – $90,000 depending on skill sets, years of experience, training, certifications, and degrees earned. It is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top of the range unless they exceed most of the job qualifications.
