Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of LA is a vital institution for Los Angeles’ Jewish and non-Jewish youth, providing a myriad of programs from mentorship to online teen guidance to college assistance to camp. Its mentors continue to meet with mentees and its online teen mental health program, Teen Talk, is thriving given an increased demand among teens for mental health assistance.
To mitigate the economic hardship resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic and to help them achieve long-term organizational sustainability.
Founded in 1915, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles (JBBBSLA) helps children and teens who need an additional role model in their lives. It works with more than 1,800 youth per year through a variety of mentoring programs, camp experiences, college guidance programs, teen empowerment workshops, and scholarship funds.
Teen Talk trains Jewish teens under the guidance of trained practitioners, to become effective peer mentors to other teens seeking support for anxiety, depression, relationships, family issues, school and beyond, who connect via a smartphone application. The program aims to build a community of empathetic teens, inspired by Jewish values, who are ambassadors of social and emotional health. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a dramatic increase in posts related to self-harm. As a result, JBBBSLA is working to expand the number of days and hours that teen advisors and the licensed social workers supervising the teens are working to ensure the mental health and safety of their peers from five days a week/four hours a day to seven days a week/five hours a day.
Founded in 2009 to help alleviate economic suffering of Jewish families caused by the economic downturn, the Jewish Family Relief Network provided first-time clients with coordinated services such as case management, mental health care, job retraining and placement, navigation of financial systems, and assistance with housing, food, and medical expenses.
The Jewish Family Relief Network is comprised of the following five organizations: Builders of Jewish Education; Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles; Jewish Family Service of Los Angeles; Jewish Free Loan Association; and Jewish Vocational Service.

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, JFS has seen a significant increase in requests for food, cash assistance, and mental health services, particularly from seniors. They had to close their congregate meal sites and shifted to home-delivered meals. They created a second shift at their Hirsh Kosher Kitchen to produce 14 meals instead of five per week and are delivering over 8,000 frozen meals per week to homebound seniors. They are also delivering SOVA grocery boxes to over 1,100 households in addition to their on-site distribution, and there are 1,000 new households receiving groceries from SOVA.

The JFS (Jewish Family Service) Lois and Richard Gunther Center will transform JFS's current Fairfax campus into a flagship service center that provides fully integrated health, mental health, and human services for older adults under one roof. It will more than double JFS's current program space and allow JFS to increase the number of clients served annually.
