A donor advised fund is a dynamic gift option that is growing in popularity. For donors who want to stay involved in advising on the use of their gift, a donor advised fund offers participation without being as restrictive or as expensive to establish as a private foundation. A donor advised fund can be created at many community foundations and at some other charitable organizations. It may be a perfect gift vehicle if you wish to make one gift to support a small number of charitable organizations, like Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles, at a high level or many charitable organizations at lower amounts.
A donor advised fund is a separately established fund to which you can make charitable gifts and retain the right to advise on the charitable recipients, the amounts, and the timing of gifts from the fund. While the charitable organization is not bound by your recommendations, it generally follows your advice as long as the suggestions are consistent with the organization's objectives and the recipients are charitable organizations.
As a donor to a donor advised fund you enjoy the tax benefits of a public charitable organization. You can deduct the amount of your cash gift up to 50 percent of your income in the year the fund is established or up to 30 percent of adjusted gross income for gifts made with long-term appreciated property. You take a charitable income tax deduction in the year the gift is made, but can reserve the right to recommend which charitable organizations will receive the funds sometime in the future.
Donor advised funds offer many advantages: You can create a fund with a small financial minimum, you delegate the investment and administrative decisions to someone else, you may add to the fund at any time, you receive more generous tax deductions than making a gift to a private foundation, and you simplify your tax filings.
