Gene Stein is Vice Chairman of Capital Guardian Trust Company, a global investment management firm, and his wife Mindy is a tireless volunteer for causes including education and family welfare. In order to involve their three children in the philanthropic process and to establish a framework for thoughtful, planned family giving, they created a Family Support Organization called the Tikun Olam Foundation. Identifying community needs and working with the Jewish Community Foundation to respond to them has now become a family affair.
"We had already been involved in philanthropy on a smaller scale when we decided to widen our focus and encourage our children to be more involved. We established a Family Support Organization at The Foundation to take advantage of the many resources that would then be available to us-the administrative and grant-making assistance, the professional financial advice, the legal guidance, the community networking. Working with The Foundation has been cost-effective and enjoyable for us. Its experienced staff has helped our family learn the value and techniques of responsible philanthropy, and alerts us to innovative funding opportunities in both the Jewish community and the community at large.
With our Family Support Organization and its board of directors, which includes community leaders, we have made more informed decisions and support our causes with confidence. We are grateful to The Foundation for helping our family expand its philanthropic scope and for bringing a new level of professionalism to our philanthropic process."
