Occupations: Marlo is a family-law attorney and Jeremy specializes in building and property management.
Legacy: An endowment fund through The Foundation.
Inspiration: "We became interested in philanthropy not by upbringing," recalls Jeremy. "Our parents and grandparents were generous, but not in a philanthropic sense." In the course of their estate planning, the couple sought a way to support causes after their passing. Says Marlo, "Since we don't have children we began asking, 'What will we end up doing with the assets we're building?'" One goal was to leave some assets to their nieces and nephews but at the same time engage them in the experience of philanthropy. The only thing they needed was a plan.
Foundation involvement: "We wanted to leave a legacy and make a difference," continues Marlo, "so we contacted The Foundation." Discussions about a family foundation turned to dialogues about identifying goals and, finally, establishing an endowment. The result is "a work in progress that we are very committed to," says Jeremy. The endowment is funded with 50 percent of the couple's future estate, and will support philanthropy as well as create a family tradition of charitable giving. By ultimately establishing Donor-Advised Funds for their nieces and nephews, Marlo and Jeremy are helping shape these children's destinies and imbuing them with a concern for community.
Reflections: "We wanted to 'make a difference' in a different way, concludes Marlo, "and since we won't be making a difference through a legacy of children, we decided to do this, through The Foundation." Adds Jeremy: "The Foundation is providing an incredible service to the Jewish community, and to be able to set something like this up without an additional cost to us-and with the extremely important guidance of The Foundation…was very important to us."
