Brad and Tracey Copeland loved adventure. They rode motorcycles through Vietnam, camels across the Sahara Desert and paddled the rapids of the Pacuare River in Costa Rica. Even at home in Los Angeles, they enjoyed seeking out new experiences and uncovering interesting things along the way.
On January 24, 2006, Tracey died suddenly at age 32. Tracey's life was short, but her impact was monumental, and Brad wanted to create a living memorial that would reflect Tracey's spirit. A friend suggested that he open a fund at The Foundation in Tracey's memory. Making the memorial turned out to be a powerful way to remember Tracey and a positive source of focus during a very challenging time, recalls Brad, an Internet and media professional specializing in sales and marketing.
"My friend had a strong financial background, so his recommendation had instant credibility and resonated with me. Once I made the decision to establish a Donor Advised Fund, The Foundation shared their resources and time with me. I knew I wanted to attach Tracey's memory to a cause, but I didn't want to be hasty about it. My Donor Advised Fund gives me an opportunity to be methodical about my giving. And, because it grows over time, Tracey's memorial will truly live on. I plan to concentrate on small, local organizations and causes that Tracey would want to help, such as animal shelters and children in need. That's where our dollars can have the biggest impact and be truly transformational. I wouldn't hesitate to call upon The Foundation's expertise again to help me with my decisions."
