It is still unbelievable. Every day, for the past few weeks, we watch the news reports on our televisions and see the devastating and heart wrenching images of the aftermath of the devastation wrought by the 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Haiti on January 12, 2010, which centered very close to the capital, Port-au-Prince. The Haiti government has confirmed that 150,000 have died to date and more yet to be found and buried. Approximately 3 million people are left in need of emergency aid after this major earthquake.
The two most vetted programs we recommend are: The Jewish Federation Fund (which is the portal to the American Jewish World Service program) and The American Red Cross. Their emergency funds can make immediate and effective use of your gift for Haiti relief.
Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles has set up a Haitian Earthquake Relief Fund in partnership with the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).
The Jewish Federation fund is a portal to the American Jewish World Service. (is this a fact?)The group will use the funds for immediate needs, such as psychological and social support; health services and education on hygiene and disease prevention; mobilizing volunteers in Haiti to help with rescue and aid distribution; and aiding the Haitian Dominican community, who can coordinate with the Dominican government for greater support; in addition to long-term rebuilding plans.

It is important that any organization you give to has been vetted. We recommend you check the searchable database of the Attorney General's Registry of Charitable Trusts at http://ag.ca.gov/charities.php to confirm that an agency or organization is registered.
Did you know that charitable contributions for Haiti relief efforts may be claimed on your 2009 tax return, rather than having to wait until next year to claim these on your 2010 tax return? |
