Supporting All Citizens
The Foundation supports organizations outside of the Jewish community to address high priority concerns in the Los Angeles community by providing Los Angeles Relief Grants.*
In 2009, in light of the economic downturn, The Foundation is awarding grants to a limited number of social service agencies that serve individuals and families with basic needs. Los Angeles Relief Grants provide these individuals and families with immediate, temporary relief through vouchers or reimbursements for basic items such as prescription medication, transportation, housing assistance, and/or clothing.
These grants symbolize The Foundation's commitment to tikkun olam ("repairing the world") beyond the Jewish community.
Applications for Los Angeles Relief Grants are by invitation only.
Award Levels
Grants range from $20,000 to $25,000.
Program Deadlines
The 2009 application process is currently closed.
Application Process
- The Foundation extends invitations to organizations to apply for a grant in October.
- Applications are due in November.
- The Grants Committee makes funding recommendations to the Board in December.
- Board approval and award letters generally take place in January.
Eligibility Requirements
All applicants must be invited by The Foundation to apply for a Los Angeles Relief Grant. Applicants must:
- Target high-priority concerns of the general community in Los Angeles
- Demonstrate potential to create a direct and clear impact on the target population and influence change relative to the issue area
- Hold a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status in the United States
Restrictions
- Programs must meet The Foundation's guidelines for grantmaking
- Generally organizations that have received funding in the past may only be considered for an award after three years
Los Angeles Relief Grants Eligibility Checklist
- Does your program target a high-priority concern of the general community in Los Angeles?
- Do you hold a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit status in the United States? Or, if you are submitting a proposal on behalf of a collaborative, coalition or network, are you the network's designated 501(c)(3) representative, or appropriate fiscal sponsor, operating in Los Angeles County?
- Does your program provide individuals and/or families with access to, or financial support for, one or more of the basic items:
- Prescription medication
- Transportation/bus tokens
- Rental assistance/motel vouchers
- Clothing or shoes
- Does your project demonstrate potential for significant impact on the issue area and constituency it serves?
- Is your funding request within the $20,000 to $25,000 range?
* In 2008, grants in this category were known as Los Angeles Collaborative Grants (LACG). In 2007 and previous years, grants in this category were known as General Community Grants (GCG).
Through its Grants Initiative, the Jewish Community Foundation has given the Westside Infant-Family Network (WIN) the ability to provide stronger clinical services to the multi-challenged families we serve. When our therapists are in families' homes helping parents and young children improve their relationships, the expertise of our new Foundation-funded Clinical Director is right there with them.
