Leket: Israel's National Food Bank was launched in 2007 by the Israeli Forum on Food Insecurity in partnership with MAZON to raise awareness about hunger in Israel and improve the delivery system of free food and groceries for low-income individuals and families. Based on the model of U.S. community food banks, Leket is designed to coordinate and streamline the efforts of many nonprofit food agencies providing free meals and groceries. "Leket" is Hebrew for gleaning and refers to the command to gather leftover food to feed the widow, orphan, and immigrant.
Leket: Israel's National Food Bank is working to ensure that the impoverished and underrepresented community has access to food that is efficiently and safely distributed. It serves as a national distribution center that receives, coordinates and allocates the donated food to a variety of nonprofit organizations. Leket creates standards for proper food handling; trains organizations to safely manage the food; and operates a bulk purchasing program to offer agencies reduced prices for purchasing food to distribute. Leket also provides nutritional education to social service agencies and their clients to ensure that those living below the poverty line understand healthy nutrition.
